Summary: This thesis looks at texts including Being and Time, An Introduction to Metaphysics and the Letter on Humanism to show that Heidegger’s existential ontology contains a significant ethical dimension, grounded on his claim that meaning and truth exist only in relation to humanity.
Beginning with a discussion of Heidegger’s method, this thesis outlines the problematic status of ethics in his thought, intellectually in terms of his system and morally and historically in terms of his association with Nazism. His epistemology of worldhood and place and his attitude to Descartes are analysed to appraise the paradigmatic significance of Heidegger's ethical ontology.
